The Fraser Institute released its controversial rankings of B.C. and Yukon secondary schools today, and New Westminster Secondary School ranked 73 out of 280.
The school scored a seven out of 10 for the 2010/11 school year, according to the report.
As is the standard most years, the top schools on the list are private schools, with Vancouver's York House topping the list - scoring 10 out of 10 - for the second year in a row. Vancouver's University Hill secondary is the highest-ranked public school on the list. At 15th, it scored 8.8 out of 10. The lowest-ranked schools on the list are George M Dawson Secondary School in Masset on Haida Gwaii and Nisga'a secondary in New Aiyansh, both scoring zero.
The school ratings are based on seven indicators: graduation rate and delayed advancement rate; the average exam mark in Grade 10 to12 courses that include a mandatory provincial exam; percentage of Grade 10 to 12 mandatory provincial examinations failed; the average difference by which the school mark exceeds the exam mark in the above-mentioned courses; differences between male and female students in their exam marks in English 10 and Math 10; graduation rate; and delayed advancement rate.
