New Westminster residents still have time to vote today

Royal City residents can get a jump on Saturday's civic election at today's advanced voting. Advanced voting takes place today (Tuesday, Nov. 15) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in council chambers at New Westminster City Hall.

Royal City residents can get a jump on Saturday's civic election at today's advanced voting.

Advanced voting takes place today (Tuesday, Nov. 15) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in council chambers at New Westminster City Hall. Advanced voting also took place on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Brenda Sims, the city's chief election officer, said 436 people voted during the first day of advanced voting. Because last year's figure is a combined total of both days of advance voting, she said it's hard to know if this year's turnout is larger than the 2008 advanced voting.

"It was steady all day," she said about the first day of advanced voting.

Sims said a strong turnout for early voting can sometimes be an indication of a larger than normal turnout on Election Day.

On Nov. 19, 15 polling stations will be set up in locations around the city - Queen Elizabeth, Connaught Heights, Lord Tweedsmuir, Lord Kelvin, John Robson, Herbert Spencer, F.W. Howay and Richard McBride elementary schools, as well as St. Barnabas Anglican Church Hall, River Market, Century House, The Armoury, Dunwood Place, Glenbrook Park Amenities Centre and Sapperton Pensioners Hall.

Voting cards aren't issued in New Westminster for the municipal elections but qualified electors are entitled to vote once.
