A ruptured gas line has led the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service to evacuate some residents from their homes.
Fire inspector Brent Joel said fire crews responded to a break in a two-inch gas line in a laneway off of Lee Street, which is located near the New Westminster and Burnaby border. Fortis B.C. and the B.C. Ambulance Service have also responded to the incident, which occurred about 12:25 p.m. on March 20.
"Fortis will get there and probably shut the line down," Joel said.
Witnesses told The Record that they can smell gas in the area. Some residents have been evacuated from their homes.
Joel said he had not received any information about how the gas line near Richmond and Kent streets was damaged.
