New Westminster residents asked to keep emergency department for emergencies

The Fraser Health Authority is reminding residents: the holidays are a busy time in emergency departments and they should be left for just that - emergencies.

The health authority is asking residents to avoid unnecessary trips to the hospital to deal with things that could be or should be done elsewhere.

"We know that emergencies and other serious health concerns happen every day, but some of the influx of patients during the holidays is related to people needing a prescription refill or a family physician check-up when their doctor's office is closed for the holidays," said Dr. Craig Murray, medical director for Surrey Memorial Hospital's emergency department.

"People with serious health conditions need our emergency physicians and healthcare staff to be available when needed, so we are reminding people to plan ahead - check your doctor's holiday hours and walk-in clinics in your area and get your prescriptions refilled well before you run out to avoid unnecessary trips to emergency during the busy winter season."

Beyond planning ahead and getting familiar with other options, Fraser Health is also recommending residents call the toll-free HealthLink B.C. line at 811 if they have questions about basic medical services or where to access them.

Residents should also take preventative measures to keep them out of a hospital bed by doing things like getting a flu shot, washing hands frequently to avoid spreading germs, making sure surfaces and cooking utensils are sterilized and taking extra caution on the roads and at home.
