New West’s newest elementary school will have a child-care centre with a familiar name.
The Lower Mainland Purpose Society was selected as the child-care operator for the Qayqayt Elementary School Neighbourhood Learning Centre.
“The New Westminster school district looks forward to expanding its partnership with the Lower Mainland Purpose Society in providing quality and affordable child care at the new Qayqayt School Neighbourhood Learning Centre,” said Casey Cook, trustee and chair of the neighbourhood learning centre advisory committee. “The Neighbourhood Learning Centre programs will complement and support existing school and community programs and services.”
The Neighbourhood Learning Centres are a part of a provincial government program that allows school districts to build additional community space at new schools. As part of the overall plan to build new schools in the city, the district secured funding through the program and plans to develop an accessible, inclusive and vibrant school that will act as a neighbourhood hub.
The centres offer a range of programs and services to meet the diverse needs of the community. Programs and services are generally provided by non-profit groups, organizations, government-funded programs and community partners.
The child-care centre is scheduled to January 2015.
