Police are warning residents of New Westminster to be extra cautious when answering the telephone this holiday season.

The New Westminster Police Department has received several reports of unsolicited phone calls asking for donations for the "New Westminster Police Department Anti-Bullying Fund."

According to police, the department does not solicit for donations and this bullying fund does not exist.

The calls appear to come from a phone number starting with the digits 778-785. When someone answers the call, the caller then asks for donations to the anti bullying fund, usually about $300 or less depending on the resistance of the person who answered the phone, stated a media release from the department.

At this time, the department hasn't had any reports of people being tricked by the caller and losing money, the release added.

New Westminster police are asking residents to be wary of any type of call they receive similar to this one as scammers sometimes change the name of the organization they are soliciting for.

If anyone receives, or has received, a call of this nature they are asked to hang up immediately and report the call to police.
