A New Westminster police officer has resigned after he was suspended for allegedly misusing information gathered illegally from police databases.

The NWPD first reported the suspension of this member March 7.

The officer was suspended, with pay, while the office of the Police Complaints Commissioner continued its investigation. The department removed the officer's access to all police databases during this time.

For privacy reasons, the NWPD won't be releasing any further information on the circumstances surrounding the Police Act investigation, said Staff Sgt. Paul Hyland.

However, CBC reported earlier this month that the officer allegedly provided illegally obtained information to a private investigator working a child custody case.

Newly-hired private investigator Adam Span became suspicious when he received a text message from his boss that included a significant amount of personal information on Span's target. He later discovered the information had come from an officer at the NWPD and quickly filed complaints with the police and Ministry of Justice, according to CBC.

At this time, Hyland said he can't verify if this report from CBC is accurate, especially while the Police Act investigation continues.

The NWPD will continue its own investigation into the officer's conduct, as required by the Police Act. If a penalty is warranted it will only be enforced if the officer is hired at another police department.

No severance package or special buyout has been offered to the officer by the NWPD.
