A Burnaby man is facing several charges in New Westminster after crashing his SUV into a parked car, allegedly drunk.

According to Sgt. Gary Weishaar, witnesses reported a black Lincoln Navigator swerving and nearly striking the curb while travelling eastbound off the Queensborough Bridge just after 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

Witnesses followed the suspect driver until he crashed in the 1800-block of 10th Avenue. Police arrived shortly after and found the suspect and witnesses still on the scene. While gathering information from witnesses and the driver, officers formed the opinion the man was driving impaired and arrested him.

While at New Westminster police headquarters, however, the man refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. He was served court documents and released.

Police are recommending charges of impaired driving and refusal to provide a breath sample for the 52-year-old man. His car has also been impounded for 30 days.

Weishaar said it was fortunate that no one was injured in the incident.
