If you're speeding through the Royal City this week, drivers should consider this their warning.

According to a press release from New Westminster Police Sgt. Diana McDaniel, police will set up in various locations around the city later this week to enforce ICBC's Speed Relative to Conditions Campaign.

McDaniel noted that with rain and inclement weather in the forecast, drivers need to drive slower to give themselves a safe stopping distance.

"Between 2006 and 2010, B.C. saw approximately 58 fatalities where driving too fast for conditions was a contributing factor," said New Westminster Chief Const. Dave Jones. "We want to reinforce that posted speed limits are for ideal conditions only. Drivers need to slow down to give themselves enough time to react during poor weather conditions, such as heavy rain and icy roads."

Some quick tips for staying safe on the roads this fall and winter are checking road conditions before heading out; slowing down and increasing following distance to at least four seconds; allowing for extra time to get to destinations; and ensuring that vehicle tires and windshield wipers are in optimal condition.
