The New Westminster police are reminding the public to be diligent in safeguarding their personal information after a recent incident in the city.
On Oct. 22, a woman reported her purse being stolen from her car, which was parked in front of her home. Shortly afterwards, the woman received a phone call from a blocked number. The man on the phone said he was a police officer and he had arrested the suspect who had stolen her purse. The man then told her he was transferring her to the security section of her bank, at which time a woman came on the phone. The woman then convinced her to reveal the PIN numbers for her bank cards so they could be replaced.
In the meantime, New Westminster police officers arrived at the woman's home and told the woman that the phone call was a scam.
Police are reminding people not to leave items of value in their car; remove all possessions when parking; never reveal the PIN number to their debit or credit cards to anyone; and be vigilant in revealing personal information over the phone or Internet.
If you are unsure if you are talking with a police officer, request their name, badge number and a callback number so you can be sure it is legitimate.
