New Westminster police have three detectives looking into why a man drove a black Dodge Ram pickup truck into the main entrance of the Royal Columbian Hospital just after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

According to Sgt. Diana McDaniel of the New Westminster Police Department, nobody was injured in the accident, but the building sustained some damage, especially in the lobby area, near the coffee shop.

The man driving the truck was still in hospital as of Sunday evening, but according to McDaniel, he was initially there for medical assessment and he sustained no injuries as a result of the accident.

"Our initial indications are he was already there to be treated for something, he left and then he decided to come back and that's when the accident happened," said McDaniel, who added that detectives are looking into whether the man was suffering from mental health issues.

New Westminster detectives have gone through video surveillance footage and will be examining it further to see what might have led to the accident.
