A Tuesday afternoon shooting incident in West Kelowna will be investigated by members of the New Westminster Police Department.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. when members of the West Kelowna RCMP tried to pull over a green Dodge minivan.

While police followed the vehicle in an attempt to pull it over, the three people in the minivan - two men and a woman - are alleged to have started shooting at the police.

An hour-long car chase from West Kelowna then ensued, with the three suspects changing vehicles and evading police until they crashed at Swan Lake near Vernon.

While the RCMP's Southeast District major crimes unit is taking over the case, an external police force, in this case, New Westminster, has been brought in for a separate investigation to look into the RCMP's use of force in relation to the injuries sustained by the woman.
