New Westminster Police have arrested a man and charged him with attempting to steal a car, but he may face justice elsewhere.
Police responded to a call around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, reporting a man trying to steal a parked vehicle in the 100-block of East Columbia Street, according to a press release from Sgt. Gary Weishaar.
When officers arrived at the scene, the man took off towards the river. Police called in the canine unit to sniff the man out. The police service dog tracked the man into a patch of bramble bushes though the men "engaged and resisted" officers and the dog, Weishaar said.
Once detained, police took the man to Royal Columbian Hospital to be treated for cuts and scrapes to his arms.
Police are recommending several charges including theft of vehicle for the man who is a 46-year-old American citizen. The man is wanted by the United States Marshall Service on several outstanding warrants however, and New Westminster police are now working with the Canadian Border Services Agency to determine if and how the man should be removed from Canada.
