New Westminster parents to talk budget on CKNW

New Westminster school district parents were invited to discuss the district's hefty budget shortfall on CKNW this Sunday.

New Westminster school district parents were invited to discuss the district's hefty budget shortfall on CKNW this Sunday.

The Lower Mainland radio station asked district parent advisory council members Kal Randhawa, Lisa Chao and Rob Peregoodoff to speak on the World Today Weekend with Sean Leslie at 4:30 p.m.

"I'm just speaking as a parent," Randhawa said. "I'm not speaking as a member of DPAC."

Randhawa and Chao have been critical of the school district since their experience with a math teacher last school year. The parents complained about the teacher but felt their concerns were stymied. Eventually, Chao had to file a freedom-of-information request to try and get some answers about math marks at the high school.

The parents, along with many others in New Westminster, are concerned about the district's $2.8-million surprise deficit, which was only discovered after the board of education passed what it thought was a balanced budget in the spring.
