The B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives has disciplined a New Westminster nurse for breaching patient privacy.

A New Westminster nurse has been disciplined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives for breaching patient privacy.

A panel from the college's inquiry committee approved a consent agreement on April 5 with nurse Gurpreet Sandhu of New West.

The agreement stems from issues that occurred in March 2022, according to a post by the nurses' college.

According to the agreement, Sandhu contacted the parents of a former patient, using a telephone number listed in a newspaper article, then agreed to meet them to discuss the former patient. Sandhu also breached the privacy of patients on an inpatient psychiatric unit by meeting with the parents in a common area of the unit, according to the details of the agreement.

Sandhu has agreed to terms, including:

  • a suspension of Sandhu's nursing registration for two days;
  • a public reprimand; and
  • remedial education in ethics, privacy and boundaries.

"The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public," the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives post says.
