A 32-year-old New Westminster woman was in court Monday and charged with manslaughter in connection with the June 2011 death of her six-month old son.
Joyce Dobranski was charged following an investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
IHIT spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Pound said at a Monday morning press conference outside the New Westminster courthouse that Dobranski first called 911 and reported her baby in distress at her Royal City home at 4 a.m. on June 22 last year.
The baby was initially taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, but was then transferred to Children's Hospital in Vancouver, where he died three days later.
IHIT was called in to investigate the case on June 24 and since then, has worked closely with the New Westminster Police Service, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, a pathologist and medical staff from B.C. Children's Hospital.
Dobranski was arrested on March 9 at her New Westminster residence.
According to Pound, the father of the child cooperated with police and there was enough evidence to support the manslaughter charges against Dobranski.
