New Westminster MLA gets coffee and doughnuts ready for protesters

New Westminster MLA Dawn Black's constituency office is getting the Timbits and coffee ready for demonstrators who are expected to turn up tomorrow for a protest against the Enbridge pipeline.

New Westminster MLA Dawn Black's constituency office is getting the Timbits and coffee ready for demonstrators who are expected to turn up tomorrow for a protest against the Enbridge pipeline.

Protests are planned at MLA offices throughout the province to convey opposition to the controversial plan to pipe crude from the Alberta oil sands.

But those who show up will find a friend in Black, whose party opposes the pipeline.

"I think what they're trying to do is raise the issue, and they contacted my office and told me they're coming; they're calling it Defend Our Coast," Black said. "It's people who are taking the time to show all the MLAs that they know their position on the Enbridge pipeline."

Black "strongly opposes" Enbridge because of the environmental risks.

As for tomorrow's protests, Linda Asgeirsson, Black's constituency assistant, said they planned to pick up the goodies to share with the protestors.

"If they'd like, we can all stand around and chat," she said, laughing because of the mutual opposition to the pipeline.

An estimated 3,500 demonstrators also turned up at the B.C. legislature on Monday to voice their opposition to the pipeline.
