Turnout was higher at 2011 advanced polls in New Westminster but it remains to be seen if that will translate into increased turnout on election day.

New Westminster voters were able to take part in advance voting on Nov. 9 and 15 at New Westminster City Hall.

Brenda Sims, the city's chief election officer, said 436 people voted during the first day of advanced voting.

"Yesterday we had 616 voters. Now we have a total of 1,052," she said. "In the last election we had 763 that voted in advanced and special voting."

Special voting hasn't yet been done, so the total ballots cast before election day will increase even more. Special voting will take place on Nov. 17 for patients at Royal Columbian Hospital and Queen's Park Care Centre.

Sims said a strong turnout for early voting can sometimes be an indication of a larger turnout than normal on Election Day.

"We will have to see," she said.
