New Westminster firefighters fought the heat – not fires – at this year’s shred-athon.
The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society held its annual shred-athon fundraiser on July 12 at the Canada Games Pool parking lot. Despite the sweltering heat, firefighters collected reams of paper and Shred-It quickly shred it on site.
“We raised $3,200. We were pretty happy with that,” said firefighter Trevor Tougas. “The weather probably hindered some people. The people who came out wore quite generous.”
No figures were available about the amount of paper shredded during the annual fundraiser, but it’s believed it exceeded last year’s total.
“Last year we did 4,800 kilos,” Tougas said. “I’d imagine this year we were able to do a little bit more.”
The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year and disperses funds to a number of community organizations. The society will be holdings its biannual Hydrant Cup hockey game against the Vancouver Canucks Alumni sometime in November.
New Westminster firefighters will also be taking place in a number of community events in the coming months, including the open house at the Glenbrook fire hall in September and a fundraiser for Honour House in August.
