Reunited: Lincoln is reunited with his owner after being rescued by New Westminster firefighters. He was in a building on Columbia Street, where firefighters are currently battling a massive fire.

A cat didn’t need to use up one of his nine lives to survive a fire – he had firefighters who did that for him.

As New Westminster firefighters battled fire in landmark buildings on Columbia Street, they learned a cat was still inside one of the businesses.

“A woman informed firefighters there was a cat inside 650 Columbia St. – two firefighters suited up and went in to get the cat,” said Coun. Jaimie McEvoy. “Lincoln the cat was rescued.”

Lincoln appeared to be in good spirits after being rescued by firefighters. Volunteers with the emergency pet services program provided Lincoln with a new cat carrier and cat food.

“His owner was beaming,” McEvoy said. “He was actually fairly calm – after a good period of meowing.”

Fire broke out in the historic E.L. Lewis Block at 634 Columbia St. shortly before 4 a.m. Oct 10. The fire has spread to an adjacent building, which firefighters are attempting to save.
