The City of New Westminster is searching for underground utilities around the future təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre.

As part of construction on the facility, the City of New Westminster will be conducting work to locate underground utility services, said a notice delivered to area residents on April 14.

“This work is required to properly identify the location of underground storm and sewer services in advance of work that will take place this spring,” said the notice.

In order to complete this work, East Sixth Avenue, between Cumberland Street and McBride Boulevard, will be reduced to single-lane alternating traffic on Thursday, April 20 and Friday, April 22, and again on Monday, April 24 and Tuesday, April 25. The work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“A portion of Glenrook Drive between East Sixth Avenue and Eddie Drive will also be closed to traffic and parking,” said the notice. “All roads will reopen for normal use at the end of each workday. All cars parked in the closure area must be moved by 7 a.m.”

For a portion of this work, the greenway will be closed and cyclists will be required to share the road with vehicle traffic, said the notice.

“Some sidewalk closures will also be required, and pedestrians will be directed to use the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street. Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist the public in navigating the work site,” said the notice. “We will endeavour to minimize the disruption as much as possible. However, as with a project of this nature, some disruption is inevitable.”

In addition to some impacts associated with road, sidewalk and greenway closures, the notice stated that area residents may also notice some loud noise and vibrations from construction equipment.

In February, council received an update about the facility, which is expected to have a soft opening in time for Family Day in February 2024 and a grand opening in March 2024.

The 10,644-square-metre facility will include aquatic facilities (including a leisure pool, lap pool, adult hot pool, family hot pool, diving boards, steam room and sauna); fitness areas; a cycle studio; two gymnasiums; multi-purpose rooms; a lobby where people can gather; a child-care facility for up to 37 children; café food services; and outdoor spaces.
