New West takes action to address extreme fire hazard rating

The sizzling heat has prompted New Westminster’s fire chief to impose a fire ban in city parks and natural areas.

The sizzling heat has prompted New Westminster’s fire chief to impose a fire ban in city parks and natural areas.

Due to the extreme hot and dry conditions, Fire Chief Tim Armstrong has ordered a no-smoking ban in all city parks, natural lands and Glenbrook Ravine. That means there’s to be no smoking, no charcoal or wood-burning barbecues and no open fires in these areas.

According to a press release from the city, propane barbecues are permitted - provided they’re placed on a raised, non-combustible surface. The fire department will work in conjunction with other departments and will continue to monitor the state of city parks.

New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services is asking residents to report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911 immediately. It’s also reminding residents that campfires aren’t permitted in city parks at any time.
