Sisters Tegan Cheremkora and Taryn Barrett are fifth-generation Royal City residents and graduates of Emily Carr University who have been involved in arts advocacy in New Westminster for more than 10 years.
This year, the sibling duo won the top honour from the Donald's Market ONE Prize contest for their proposal to host an art event at River Market at the Westminster Quay.
Cheremkora and Barrett are excited that day is almost here.
"We've been planning this for a while . everything's coming together really nicely, so I think it will turn out really well," said Cheremkora.
Tonight, Nov. 30, the River Market at the Westminster Quay will be open upstairs from 6 to 9 p.m. for everyone to discover a taste of the local art scene.
To get their idea off the ground, the siblings were given a $3,000 grant from Donald's Market and the River Market to perform music, circus and dance numbers, recite poetry and prose, showcase their paintings and sculptures and chefs who will offer culinary creations.
The project - called The Night Is Young - is a free exhibition and live show featuring art by those who live, work and play in New Westminster.
"Growing up in New West, we went to school with a lot of artists who wrote music and who we made art with, and I think it's just nice to be able to do something for the community," said Cheremkora. "And a lot of artists in New West don't get the opportunity to display their artwork very often, so I think for emerging artists it's a nice opportunity."
Admission is free.
