Thousands of people descended on Columbia Street for the Show and Shine in past years, but a new organizer hasn't been able to get the event off the ground for the past two years.

The 2016 Show and Shine has hit a bump in the road for the second year in a row.

Alan Wardle, president of the Hyack Festival Association, told the Record that Hyack has had to cancel this year’s event, but is looking forward to working with the city to bring the Show & Shine back to New West in the future.

“I am crossing my fingers on that one,” he said. “We will still pursue it.”

Wardle said it’s been a bit of a “bumpy road” getting the event going, but Hyack is looking forward to working with the city to get the event back on track. He noted that Hyack agreed to take over the event at a time when the city was making changes to its festivals process and grant program.

“We were more than happy to take it on,” he said.

In past years, the Royal City Show and Shine attracted more than 300 classic cars and over 145,000 people to downtown New Westminster. The Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association organized the event until 2014, before choosing to focus on other events.

The Hyack Festival Association agreed to take over the event, and Key West Ford got on board as the title sponsor, but eventually cancelled the 2015 event because of “logistical difficulties” and timelines.
