Starting on Jan. 1, 2020, you will be paying more for parking on the street in New Westminster.

According to the city, street parking rates will increase to $3/hour in the Downtown, Uptown, and Sapperton neighbourhoods, and to $2.50/hour for all other areas of the city.

“Rates have not increased in more than five years and the increase brings New Westminster parking rates more closely in-line with off-street (parkade) rates, transit fares, and other Lower Mainland municipalities,” reads a notice by the city. “These changes have also been implemented to reflect the growing demand for limited on-street parking in our city, thereby encouraging sufficient parking turnover in busy commercial districts and supporting vibrant economic activity. The approved rates include a council-directed $0.25/hour Climate Action Levy to help offset the cost of programs and initiatives directly related to the city’s climate emergency response.”
