A report of a person “armed with an edged weapon” resulted in a heavy police presence at a call in downtown New West.

About 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, the New Westminster Police Department received “numerous” 911 calls from residents in a multi-family complex in the 300 block of Agnes Street. Callers reported that a fight was taking place between two people, one of whom was described as being armed with an edged weapon.

“As police made their way to the scene it was uncertain if anyone had been injured,” said a NWPD press release. “Officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody without incident.”

According to the NWPD, attending officers determined that no one had been injured in the incident. They also determined that the weapon involved was a pair of scissors.

“We thank neighbours for their patience as this call prompted a large police response,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “One person who was arrested for assault with a weapon remains in police custody.”

The New Westminster Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed this incident and has not yet spoken to police to call 604-525-5411.
