New West police nab car thief

Second suspect escapes on foot
Arrested

An alleged car thief is in custody after a chance encounter with New Westminster police Thursday afternoon.

Officers were patrolling in Uptown and Queen’s Park when they came across two men working on a vehicle on the side of the road. Police ran the car’s info and learned it had been reported stolen, Sgt. Chad Johnston, spokesperson for the New Westminster Police Department, told the Record.

The suspects fled on foot with police in pursuit. One suspect managed to evade arrest, even after a police canine unit was brought in to search for him, Johnston said.

Officers were, however, able to catch the second suspect and arrest him – he was expected in New Westminster court on Friday, he added.
