New West police closed downtown road to help a person in distress

No crime committed: Tuesday night closure on Carnarvon Street unrelated to nearby shooting earlier in the day

New Westminster Police closed off part of Carnarvon Street Tuesday night to aid a person in distress.

A police road closure in downtown New West on Tuesday night had nothing to do with a crime being committed.

Some downtown residents took to social media around 10:30 p.m. to express concern that a crime may have been committed because the New Westminster Police Department had blocked off Carnarvon Street between Eighth Street and the McInnes overpass.

“The road closure last night near the Shops at New West was due to officers providing assistance to someone in distress,” Hailey Finnigan, the New Westminster Police Department’s strategic communications coordinator, said in a statement to the Record.

The incident came on the heels of a shooting less than a block away earlier in the day on Carnarvon Street.

Around noon on Tuesday, April 18, New West police responded to a shooting in the 700 block of Carnarvon Street. One man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and two suspects were in custody.

The Record has contacted the New Westminster Police Department for an update on the shooting.
