A man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole revocation was arrested after telling staff at a local drug store that he had a gun.

New Westminster Police say they received a call about 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 from staff at a drug store near the New Westminster SkyTrain station’s bus loop. The Shoppers Drug Mart employee told police they were witnessing a man trying to access the cash register and he had told them he had a gun.

According to a NWPD press release, officers flooded the area and located a man matching the suspect’s description inside the drug store.

“The suspect was arrested without incident. No firearm was located,” said the press release. “The police response did temporarily close the New Westminster SkyTrain station bus loop.”

New West police learned the suspect was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole revocation. The suspect, a New West resident in his 50s, was transported to the New Westminster Police Department cells.

“I want to remind all business owners and staff in New Westminster that if you ever feel unsafe, call 911 and we will be there,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar in a news release. “This staff member did the right thing, and we’re happy this was resolved quickly and safely.”

According to the police department, no charges have yet been laid, and the matter is still being investigated.
