Two local residents are in hospital after a dog attacked them this morning.

Just before 3 a.m., the New Westminster Police Department received a call about a male and female yelling in their apartment, and a dog barking.

Once on the scene, officers found both of them with dog bites on their heads and faces, according to a press release.

The pair, which live in the 300 block of Ash Street, was transported to hospital, where they were treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Animal Services took the canine into custody and has started an investigation.

Supervisor James Doan said while the breed hasn’t been confirmed, the dog appears to be a pit bull.

Asked whether or not the animal will be put down, he couldn’t say.

“At this stage, we’re just starting the investigation, so we can’t really come to any conclusions yet.”

Doan did suggest, however, that a mauling like this shouldn’t be associated with just pit bulls.

“It could be any animal, any breed,” he said.
