Seven New Westminster police officers were named to Alexa’s Team for their work in getting impaired drivers off the streets.

New West constables Jamie Crowston, Jeff Scott, Jaspaul Chung, Ted Ishii, Jeff Russell, Brandon Blue and Mike Wise (seconded to the B.C. Integrated Road Safety Unit) were appointed to Alexa’s Team for getting 139 impaired drivers off the streets in 2013, according to a media release from the New Westminster police.

Alexa’s Team is an annual partnership in honour of the death of Alexa Middelaer, a four-year-old girl who was killed by an impaired driver in May 2008 while walking down the street with her aunt.

Founded in 2009, Alexa’s team is a partnership between ICBC, the BCAA Road Safety Foundation and the Middelaer family to recognize police officers across the province who have taken a minimum of 12 criminally impaired drivers off the streets, either through a criminal charge investigation or immediate roadside prohibition.

The Middelaer family joined representatives from ICBC and the Justice Institute of B.C. at Southridge junior school in Surrey on Wednesday to recognize the 134 officers from the Lower Mainland who formed the 2013 Alexa's Team. In total, there were 313 officers from across the province named to the 2013 team, including the seven constables from New Westminster.

This is third year in a row Wise has been named to Alexa’s Team, and the second year in a row for Crowston, Scott, Chung and Ishii.
