Registered nurses in B.C. are regulated by the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives.

A registered nurse from New Westminster has been disciplined for assaulting a patient in their care last summer.

Errol Latchman has been suspended one month, according to a decision last Friday, March 1, by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

As well, he has voluntarily agreed to complete anger management courses resulting from the August 2023 incident.

In its notice, the BCCNM said the patient initially assaulted Latchman at the start of the confrontation.

However, Latchman responded by throwing "activated charcoal" at the patient and punched them in the face "with a closed fist."

A consent agreement was made between a BCCNM panel and Latchman to suspend his registration for one month, as well as take "comprehensive remedial" anger management and ethics courses.

"The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public," the decision reads.

"BCCNM is required by law to regulate the nursing and midwifery professions in the public interest," the organization's website states.

It also notes disciplines of any kind are to ensure public safety when receiving care. You can visit the BCCNM's website for more information.
