New West mayor to lead Earth Day livestream event

New Westminster residents are invited to a special livestream conversation to celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, 2021. Mayor Jonathan Coté will lead a panel discussion about the City’s response to climate change.

New Westminster residents are invited to a special livestream conversation to celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, 2021. 

Mayor Jonathan Coté will lead a panel discussion about the City’s response to climate change. The Mayor will be joined by Erika Mashig, Manager- Parks and Open Space Planning, Design and Construction and Leya Behra, Manager of Climate Action. The public will also have the opportunity to pose questions to the panel in advance or during the event.

“The City of New Westminster believes every day is Earth Day,” said Mayor Jonathan Coté.  “We are constantly striving to ensure we preserve our community’s quality of life by both protecting our local environment and supporting global action

“From backyard initiatives like our popular annual tree sale to major commitments such as declaring a climate emergency and adopting our seven bold steps to address climate change, we are taking concrete steps to ensure the health of our planet and community for today and for future generations>”

The livestream forum will take place from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2021.

Participants will be able to submit questions during the livestream or can send questions in advance by email to: nwmatters@newestcity.ca. For those unable to watch the livestream, the video will be available for later viewing on the City’s website.

The City of New Westminster declared a climate emergency in March, 2019 and subsequently endorsed seven bold steps to guide the process with the goal of moving New Westminster towards a
