New Westminster civic politicians have been assigned to seven of Metro Vancouver's standing committees, plus one task force, in 2024.

Mayor Patrick Johnstone will vice-chair the climate action committee with Vancouver Coun. Lisa Dominato as chairperson.

As well, Johnstone has been named to five other committees next year, including flood resiliency, Indigenous relations and regional planning in addition to the mayors committee. He'll also join the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant program task force.

Meanwhile, New West Coun. Nadine Nakagawa will join the roundtable for liquid waste, chaired by neighbouring Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, as well as for regional culture.

The appointments were announced last Wednesday, Dec. 20, in a statement from Metro Vancouver.

There are 15 standing committees — each one governs the often unseen yet vital aspects of regional infrastructure.

Metro Vancouver is made up of 21 municipalities from Lions Bay to Langley Township, an electoral area and Tsawwassen First Nation, and plans for regional services such as waste, drinking water, urban growth and affordable housing.
