A New Westminster man was arrested after two alleged thefts in Surrey last month.

The 40-year-old was arrested by New Westminster police on May 26 in connection with the theft catalytic converters, which are emissions-control devices attached to a vehicle’s exhaust system that converts toxic exhaust gases into less harmful emissions.

“A catalytic converter … can be sold for a small amount of cash to scrap metal dealers,” said acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the New Westminster Police Department, in a press release. “The replacement cost for a catalytic converter, however, can be significant for both the owner and their insurance company.”

Jeff Whittaker Straker is charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and two counts of mischief. The alleged crimes took place on May 19 and 22.

Straker is scheduled to appear in court June 15.

In January, New Westminster police issued a warning to residents regarding an increase in catalytic converter thefts, particularly in side streets surrounding McBride Boulevard. At the time, police reported thieves were targeting newer model Volkswagen sedans.
