Summer's heating up in the Royal City and there's no shortage of things to do. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. For the weekend of Aug. 10 to 12, we suggest:
Check out some of the local culture at the eighth annual New Westminster Cultural Crawl, which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The event is part of the B.C. Cultural Crawl. During the crawl, residents can enjoy a self-guided tour of more than 20 galleries, studios, shops and locales and check out their artistic offerings. Full details are found at www.newwest culturalcrawl.com.
Be entertained at the Concert at the Quay, which features Dustin Bentall and Kendel Carson on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Westminster Quay. Bentall, who is the son of legendary Canadian rocker Barney Bentall, will be performing with his partner, Victoria violinist Kendel Carson. The new summer concert series at Westminster Quay, a partnership between Hyack Festival Association and River Market, features free concerts on a stage set up on the boardwalk between River Market and Fraser River Discovery Centre.
Drop by Port Royal community garden and enjoy an English tea party, which takes place on Sunday, Aug. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. The event features an exhibit by Artists in the Boro, gardens in bloom, live music and free light snacks and refreshments. For more information, call the Queensborough Community Centre at 604-525-7388.
Get your game on at the New Westminster Museum, where an exhibit is exploring the history of video games in B.C. is underway. Guest curator Ryan Cousineau is dropping by the museum on Saturday, Aug. 11 for a Video Play Day - where kids will get to check out the games their parents used to play. For information (and to see if space is still available to play) call 604-527-4640.
Rent a bike and tour the city on two wheels. Fraser River Bike Tours and Rentals, which is based at River Market, offers guided cycling field trips. Bikes and equipment are available for rent for adults, kids and seniors. Details on prices and tours are available at www.fra serriverbiketours.com.
