New West groups host all-candidates' meetings

At least five candidates will be vying for your vote in New Westminster-Burnaby on Election Day.

Currently, the New Westminster-Burnaby electoral district has five confirmed candidates for the Oct. 19 general election: Chloe Ellis (Conservative Party of Canada); Peter Julian (New Democratic Party); Sasha Ramnarine (Liberal Party of Canada); Kyle Routledge (Green Party of Canada); and Joseph Theriault (Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada).

Nominations for candidates in the 2015 federal election close on Monday, Sept. 28, so Elections Canada won’t have a complete list of confirmed candidates until Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Meet your candidates

Royal City residents have a few more opportunities for getting to know the local candidates vying for their vote in the Oct. 19 federal election.

The Queen’s Park Residents’ Association is having an all-candidates’ meeting on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Centennial Lodge in Queen’s Park. If you missed out on the Massey Victory Heights Residents' Association’s Sept. 24 meeting and you can’t make the Queen’s Park Residents’ Association’s Sept. 27 all-candidates meeting, you have a couple more chances to catch up with the candidates.

NEXT New Westminster and Tenth to the Fraser are hosting a Cruisin’ with the Candidates meet-and-greet with candidates on The Native paddlewheeler on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available through Eventbrite at www.eventbrite.ca.

Tej Kainth, founder of NEXT New Westminster, said candidates will have a chance to introduce themselves and take part in a 20-minute question-and-answer session, after which time they’ll be able to mingle with candidates during the 90-minute cruise.

“It’s just a real neat way of getting to know your candidates in a casual environment,” she said. “And you get to go on a boat cruise at the same time.”

The meet-and-greet format has proven successful in the past, said Kainth, as it gives people a chance to chat with candidates about the issues they’re concerned about in a casual setting. Tickets are $15 ticket and available at www.eventbrite.ca (All Aboard – Cruisin’ with the candidates.

The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver and the Record are holding an all-candidates’ meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Inn at the Quay.

Chamber board member Stephen Bruyneel will moderate the event that will feature “business focused” questions for candidates.

“We spent the last year connecting with our members trying to find out what is important to them from an issue perspective, locally, provincially and federally,” said chamber executive director Cori Lynn Germiquet. “They came up with a series of issues – Fraser River related, of course, workforce related, investment related, small business related, etc.”
