The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society held its annual shred-athon on June 20 in the Canada Games Pool parking lot. Residents and businesses dropped off their paperwork, which was shredded right on site by Shred-It.

Along with paper shredding, the 2015 shred-athon included a barbecue, popcorn, face painting and entertainment.

“It went really well,” said firefighter Trevor Tougas. “It got off to a bit of a slow start, but it picked up at the end.”

The charitable society is still tallying how much money was raised at the event. All proceeds go to the charitable society, which distributes funds to a range of projects and groups in the city, including the Union Gospel Mission, the Lower Mainland Purpose Society and school meal programs.

“We had a really good event. Lots of people,” Tougas said. “We had the band out again. We had the barbecue going. It was great.”
