School is almost out for another year, and at the library we’re getting ready for summer. Studies show that kids who don’t read during the summer will see their reading skills decline, but this “summer slide” can be avoided simply by having kids read regularly while they’re out of school.

Starting on June 3, children and teens can sign up for the Summer Reading Club at either of the two New Westminster Public Library branches. Kids aged 3-11 can earn stickers, prizes, and the coveted Summer Reading Club medal just by reading at least 15 minutes a day.

12-18 year olds may join the Teen Summer Reading Club, where they can both read and do other activities and challenges to earn entries into weekly draws where we give away brand new books and other great prizes.

On Wednesday, June 19 at 3:30 p.m., join us for a party as we kick off the Summer Reading Club season. At the Main Branch we’ll be entertained by special guest magician Peter Rooke. In Queensborough, join us for a fun story and craft program to get the summer started.

Along with the Summer Reading Club, we’ll be putting on free weekly programs and events at the library for all ages, from July 2 to August 16. Babytime and Storytime programs return to both branches for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers.

There will also be lots to do for older kids. Kids aged 6-8 years, tweens aged 9-12 years, and teens aged 12 and up will each have a weekly program just for their age group, where we will do a variety of both high-tech and low-tech activities. These free programs require pre-registration, starting two weeks before each program date.

We look forward to seeing you at the library this summer. Visit our website at nwpl.ca for more information on registration, dates, times, and locations.
