Coun. Patrick Johnstone is concerned that work on the Pattullo Bridge will negatively impact pedestrians and cyclists.
According to Johnstone, signs near the bridge indicates the sidewalk on the Pattullo Bridge will be closed for up to a month while TransLink does some repair work on the bridge. While he recognizes the repair work is necessary, Johnstone wants TransLink to be aware of the need to engage the public in discussions when these types of closures are being done.
“That connection is vital and can’t be easily replaced,” he said.
Johnstone suggested the city contact TransLink to find out how it plans to mitigate the impact of the sidewalk closure on pedestrians and cyclists. He noted the bridge is an important transportation connection for cyclists and pedestrians, who will have no alternate way to cross the Fraser near that location during the sidewalk closure.
A notice posted on the city’s website states that TransLink will be undertaking repairs to strengthen the railing on the bride and will be closing the sidewalk between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday to Thursday from May 10 to June 5.
Queensborough projects on the agenda
New Westminster city council will consider several Queensborough developments at its June 22 meeting.
Council will consider issuance of a development variance permit to vary the zoning bylaw requirements at 620 Salter St. The proposed 54-unit townhouse development requires variances for the separations between buildings on the site and a variance for access to the tandem parking spaces.
At the same meeting, New Westminster city council will also consider a development permit for 843 Ewen Ave., where a 67-unit townhouse development is proposed. The proposal requires variances for side yards (east and west), separations between buildings (for side and front walls) and tandem parking.
A 65-unit residential development is proposed at 188 Wood St. (formerly 702 Salter St.). The proposal, which would include construction of 63 townhouse units and development of two units in the existing 1912 Hansen House, needs variances of front and rear yard requirements.
Variances are also being sought for a 34-unit townhouse development in five buildings at 240 Jardine St. The project requires variances for parking and separations between buildings on the same site.
