The New Westminster Police Department is “strongly” encouraging people to find safe rides home as the holiday season arrives in full force.

“Sadly, 68 people in this province die each year in crashes involving impaired driving,” said acting Chief Const. Dave Jansen. “I hope this year we won’t see a tragedy like that in New Westminster.”

If plans include alcohol or cannabis consumption, the NWPD is reminding people to ensure they have a safe ride home, whether it’s by public transit, a designated driver, Operation Red Nose or staying the night.

Impaired driving fines, the NWPD added, range from $600 to $4,060.

The schedule for Operation Red Nose can be found at www.operationrednosetricities.com. Anyone who sees an impaired driver is asked to call 911.
