While the BC NDP government has stopped trying to use tools from its “toolbox” to fight the Trans Mountain project, a federal NDP MP is using the issue to fight the issue as a possible national election looms.

New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian has started a petition against the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. The project has been the subject of multiple recent Burnaby and New West protests as Trans Mountain cuts down about 1,300 trees on the border of the two communities along the Brunette River.

“Instead of spending billions of public dollars on fossil fuel infrastructure and subsidies, Canada should invest in clean, renewable energy sources that create good quality, long lasting jobs for today's workers and the next generation,” reads a statement on the petition. “Moreover, the tens of billions spent on the Trans Mountain project could have been better used to strengthen and renew the social safety net that Canadians so desperately need.”
