Jonina Campbell will keep the gavel for a third consecutive year at the New Westminster school board but she’ll have a new deputy.

Campbell was acclaimed board chair for another one-year term at a board meeting Thursday, but trustee Kelly Slade-Kerr was elected vice-chair over trustee Casey Cook, who had held the position since last December.

Campbell was first elected to the board in 2011, while Slade-Kerr is still in her first term after topping the polls in the 2014 municipal election – 325 votes ahead of Campbell.

Trustee James Janzen was acclaimed as the board’s representative to the B.C. School Trustees Association, with trustee Michael Ewen as his alternate, while Mark Gifford was acclaimed as the board’s B.C. Public School Employers’ Association rep.

Campbell’s chair report summarizing the board’s work over the past year included highlights like retiring the district’s deficit, hiring superintendent Pat Duncan, promoting Kevin Lorenz to the secetary-treasurer position, opening Qayqayt Elementary and adopting the gender and sexual diversity inclusion policy

The New West board meets on the first Tuesday every September to hold elections for chair, vice-chair, BCSTA rep and alternate and BCPSEA rep and alternate.
