The Royal City's newest Safeway store is the first commercial tenant to open in The Plaza at New Westminster Station.

After many years of planning, Safeway is celebrating the official opening of its brand new New Westminster Station Safeway on Thursday, Dec. 8. The store is located in The Plaza at #200-800 Carnarvon St.

According to a press release from Canada Safeway Ltd., the new 41,000 square foot New Westminster Station Safeway store plays a significant role as an anchor tenant in the new Plaza development in New Westminster. The New Westminster Station Safeway has created 150 new jobs, and the grand opening represents a very special moment in time for the 82 year-old company.

"It's not a replacement store. It's a brand new location for us," said Mary D'Astolfo, public affairs manager for Canada Safeway Ltd. "It's quite a unique location with the Sky Train right there."

The ribbon cutting and formal public celebration takes place at 3: 30 p.m., and the store will open to the public at 4 p.m. The store will be open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.

The grand opening will include a presentation to the Hospitality Project/food bank as they kick off the holiday food drive season.

"All our stores donate to the food bank," D'Astolfo said. "The other two (New West) stores donate to the food bank."

The Plaza 88 development includes three residential towers (complete) and a commercial space on a five-acre site around the New Westminster SkyTrain station. Safeway's opening will be followed by other tenants including Landmark Cinemas, Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC, Wireless World Solutions (Fido), Western News, Subway, A&W, Arden Holdings, Extreme Pita, Flight Centre and Yogabody Lifestyle Shop.
