ARTISAN MARKET

The Arts Council of New Westminster is inviting artisans to take part in the 25th anniversary of its spring market.

The Artisans Spring Market is being held on Sunday, May 20 and Monday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Queen's Park.

"Last year we had 1,926 visitors: 825 on Sunday and 1,101 on Monday," said an email from Andrée St. Martin, executive director of the arts council. "The petting zoo and the water park will be open with lots of places to picnic and relax. There will be an antique market and entertainment in the park."

A few tables are still available at a cost of $50 for the two days. To reserve your spot, call the arts council at 6045253244.

PEEK INTO PAST

The next New Westminster Historical Society evening will be taking a look at a trio of topics.

The event is being held on Wednesday, May 16 at 7: 30 p.m. in the New Westminster Public Library's auditorium.

The presentation is based on community requests.

"Last fall a guest speaker told the story of Columbian College in New Westminster. This program will follow up on that story including the college's closing down in the 1930s," said a press release. "The school was formerly on First Street in the area of today's College Court."

The presentation will also feature a segment looking at illustrations from an 1891 Toronto newspaper, The Saturday Globe, which featured a photo story on New Westminster. This set of images from the 1890s shows what was deemed photo-worthy for a story destined for Eastern Canada.

"A final segment of the evening will centre on close-ups of pictures of local stores as, through these detailed photos, we go shopping in early New Westminster," said the press release.

"Close-up photography can open up the past in some incredible ways - this set of pictures is a great example of themes that can be displayed in this way."

The program is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. There is no need to pre-register.

RUN EVENT RAISES AWARENESS

A New Westminsterbased society is inviting community members to attend a brain injury awareness event.

According to Cheshire Homes Society, there are 14,000 new brain injuries each year in British Columbia, with a national average estimated at more than 500,000 per year.

The group seeks to raise awareness through prevention and education, given the impact that acquired brain injury has on survivors, families and the community.

The Cheshire Homes Society of B.C. is hosting its fourth annual brain injury awareness event on June 17 at Lumberman's Arch in Stanley Park - a five-kilometre and a onekm wheel/walk/run.

The event will also include inspirational guest speakers, food, prizes and an opportunity to reach out to the community to spotlight the society's mission and develop and strengthen partnerships.

Cheshire Homes Society of B.C. currently has four residential group homes, three apartmentbased programs and two community support programs.
