Burnaby RCMP announced Thursday that charges have been laid against Jaswant Gill in the 1994 murder of Thomas Akerman of New Westminster.
According to Corp. Sharon Toor of the Burnaby RCMP's unsolved homicide unit, a joint investigation was conducted with the Vancouver Police Department, which led them to Gill.
On the afternoon of December 23, 1994, Akerman was shot while sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Bonsor Recreation Centre. The shooting happened around 2 p.m. in front of witnesses who later helped piece together the scene for police, Toor said.
"There were several witnesses and definitely some of those witnesses assisted us in our investigation," she said. "It wasn't a specific tip that furthered the investigation."
Jaswant Gill, 40, was initially arrested last month, by the VPD, in connection to the murder of Akerman and his own wife, Gurpreet Gill, Toor said.
According to Toor, charges were laid immediately against Gill for the murder of his wife and today, police received confirmation from the Crown that first-degree murder charges could be served against Gill for Akerman's murder.
Gill and Akerman knew each other at the time of the murder, but Toor couldn't comment on the nature of their relationship at this time.
While Gill wasn't known to police prior to the 1994 homicide, but 26-yearold Akerman was, she said.
Gill will appear in court March 25 in Vancouver.
