A 45-year-old refugee who went missing in October has resurfaced in Ontario.
Izumi Aoyama was last seen in New Westminster on Oct. 22, two days after retrieving some belongings from the New West police station on Columbia Street, as previously reported by The Record.
Aoyama arrived in Canada from Japan in July and has been living in New Westminster since then, according to a media release from police.
Police have since determined Aoyama was seen as recently as Nov. 8 in Thunder Bay, Ont., according to a media release from the department.
Not much is known at this time as police continue their investigation with the assistance of local police in Thunder Bay, the release added.
Initially, Aoyama was considered a high risk missing person because police believed she was homeless and may be suffering from a mental illness. Investigators were pleading for the public’s help in locating her.
Concern grew when Aoyama’s belongings, including two cats, were found at the Colony Farm Regional Park in Port Coquitlam. Police were unable to determine how or when the belongings were discarded.
The investigation continues at this time.
