Christmas is more than a month away but organizers of the longstanding Operation Red Nose want to get the word out early about planning for a safe ride home this holiday season.

For almost two decades, Operation Red Nose has been providing safe rides home to people in more than 20 communities across the province. Starting on Nov. 29, volunteers will once again be providing rides by donation, with all the money going to non-profit organizations that support youth sports in B.C., including KidSport, which has a chapter in New Westminster, according to a media release.

Organizers of Operation Red Nose will be at Metropolis at Metrotown on Friday (tomorrow) from 10:30 to 11 a.m., along with special guests including Global TV’s Steve Darling, who will be emceeing the event. Volunteers will also be on hand sharing information about the program and how to sign up as a driver.

Police officers, community policing volunteers, city staff and politicians from the different communities, KidSport executives and Jill Blacklock, ICBC road safety manager. Operation Red Nose chair and former Olympian Chris Wilson will also be making a presentation and Rudy the Red Nose Reindeer, the program’s mascot, will be on hand for the little ones.

The event, which features interactive sports activities, will also include guest speaker Kevin Brooks, who will talk about his personal story regarding impaired driving.

The event takes place at the atrium court, near the entrance to SilverCity Metropolis and McDonald’s.
