MaryAnn Mortensen announced in September that she will be seeking a school trustee position in New Westminster.

Mortensen was born in Strathroy, Ont., the youngest of three children. She met her husband Trevor shortly after moving to B.C. more than 15 years ago. The couple, along with our two children, Elise and Keaton, have called New Westminster home for the past eight years.

"With the coming changes in education, first-hand knowledge of our district schools is essential to good leadership," said Mortensen. "For the past three years, I have been involved with the District Parent Advisory Council and was elected chair in 2011.

"In 2010, I was a vocal participant on the Neighbourhoods of Learning committee. Currently, I am a director-at-large for the New Westminster Montessori Society, a volunteer at Lord Tweedsmuir and Connaught Heights schools, and I am a member of the British Columbia Confederation of Parent Advisory Council's provincial and federal policy committee.

"I am running for school trustee because I believe that during this crucial time, I can meaningfully contribute to providing the best teaching and learning environment for our children in New Westminster."

Mortensen is one of five candidates endorsed by Voice New Westminster.
