New Westminster's Seniors Services Society held its first fundraiser for the Meals on Wheels program, and the event was a hit.
Approximately 200 people came out for the March 27 fundraiser at Starlight Casino in Queensborough. The event raised more than $12,000, with donations still coming in.
"It was a great evening. People definitely enjoyed themselves and will be back next year, so stay tuned," said the society's Helena Quo Vadis Mex.
The Seniors Services Society runs the local Meals on Wheels program, where volunteers deliver hot meals to 47 people - often seniors or people with mobility challenges or chronic illnesses -
who pay a small fee for the program. Quo Vadis Mex said the non-profit program was running a deficit for quite some time, so the society decided to hold its first fundraiser to keep it afloat.
There was a silent auction, entertainment from an Elvis impersonator, and a 50-50 draw, won by city councillor Lorrie Williams.
The fundraising goal was to raise $10,000 and sell 200 tickets, to help with the program's $12,000 deficit.
